5 Fun End of the Year Activities Your Students Will Love

Fun End of the Year Activities for Elementary Students

By the time the last week of school arrives, most teachers are juggling two competing goals. First, you want to keep students engaged with end of the year activities. Second, you want to make the end of the year feel meaningful and memorable.

However, if we are being honest, that final stretch can feel a little chaotic. Testing is finished, routines are fading, and students suddenly have the energy level of caffeinated squirrels.

That is exactly why having a few end of the year activities ready to go makes such a difference.

The good news is that these activities do not have to be complicated. In fact, some of the best fun end of the year activities are simple, reflective, and just a little bit silly.

Here are five ideas that work beautifully for elementary classrooms:

End of the Year Activities

1. Advice for Next Year’s Students (Advice Backpack Craft)

First, start the week with a reflective activity that lets students feel like the classroom experts.

One of my favorite end of the year activities for students is having them write advice for next year’s class.

Students love the idea that they are passing down wisdom to the next group of kids. Some advice is thoughtful, while other advice is… extremely entertaining.

You might see things like:

  • Always bring extra pencils
  • Finish your math before recess
  • Be nice to your teacher
  • Do not forget your lunchbox

In my classroom, students write their advice on a backpack themed craft that we display on a bulletin board. It creates a really sweet visual reminder of everything the class learned during the year.

Even better, the next class gets to read those notes in August.

2. End of the Year Memory Slideshow

Next, it is time to celebrate the memories your class made together.

A class memory slideshow is one of the easiest fun end of the year activities to prepare. Throughout the year you probably snapped photos of projects, field trips, classroom celebrations, and everyday moments.

Now is the perfect time to put them together.

Students absolutely love seeing themselves on the screen. They laugh, point, and immediately start telling stories about each picture.

More importantly, this activity gives your class a chance to pause and appreciate how much they experienced together.

3. “What Will My Teacher Do This Summer?” Writing

After reflecting on the year, students are usually ready for something a little more creative.

That is where the writing activity “What Will My Teacher Do This Summer?” comes in.

This prompt is simple but hilarious.

Students brainstorm all the things they think their teacher will do during summer break. According to my students, teachers spend the entire summer doing things like:

  • Sleeping until noon
  • Living at the beach
  • Eating popsicles all day
  • Traveling the world
  • Buying unlimited school supplies

The responses are always creative and often very funny.

At the same time, students are still practicing writing skills while feeling like they are doing something fun.

4. Minute to Win It Challenges

By the last week of school, students usually need opportunities to move, laugh, and release some energy.

That is exactly why Minute to Win It challenges work so well as fun end of the year activities.

These quick games are perfect for short bursts of excitement.

For example, try:

Cup Stacking Challenge
Students race to stack and unstack plastic cups in a specific pattern.

Cheeto Head
One student wears a shower cap with shaving cream while teammates toss Cheeto puffs and try to get them to stick.

These games take only a few minutes, but they create huge laughs. They also work especially well after testing when attention spans are a little shorter than usual.

5. Send Home End of the Year Letters and Poems

Finally, one of the most meaningful end of the year activities for students happens right before they walk out the door for summer.

Sending home letters and poems to students and families is a simple way to close the year on a positive note.

Some teachers write a short note to each student. Others send a class letter thanking families for their support throughout the year.

You can also include a small goodbye poem to mark the transition into summer and the next grade level.

Students love receiving these letters, and parents often keep them as special memories.

Wrapping Up the School Year

At the end of the day, the best end of the year activities do not have to be complicated.

Instead, focus on three things:

First, give students a chance to reflect on the year.
Next, add a little fun and laughter into the final days.
Finally, create a few lasting memories before everyone heads off for summer.

Personally, I like having a small collection of activities ready for that last week so I am not scrambling to plan something new every May.

That is actually how my End of the Year Activities Bundle came together. I wanted a simple set of reflection activities, writing prompts, memory slides, and goodbye letters that I could reuse every year without extra prep.

Because when the final week arrives, the goal is not to reinvent the wheel.

The goal is to celebrate your students and finish the year strong.

Pssst. I hate to say it, but the summer goes by in a FLASH.
